Preventive maintenance is the best way to keep your
car running safely. Neglecting even simple preventive
maintenance, such as oil changes and fluid levels, can
lead to poor fuel economy, unreliability, or costly
breakdowns, and could invalidate your warranty.
And performing scheduled maintenance in accordance to your manufacturer’s
guidelines, you will prolong your vehicle’s life as well
as ultimately lower the cost to maintain it. Check your
owner's manual for schedules and guidelines.
Oil
Changes
Most manufacturers recommend an oil change every 3,000
miles. Some manuals recommend an oil change every 7500,
but only under certain driving conditions. Before
choosing to wait that long for an oil change, be sure
your vehicle fits those conditions.
Master Tire & Auto Service's expert and
experienced mechanics will change the oil filter and replace your vehicle's oil
with the manufacturer-recommended weight and grade of
oil. Most manufacturer's use 5W-30, a number that
indicates viscosity in cold and heat. The first number
indicates how the oil will flow at low temperatures: the
lower the number, the lighter the oil. The second number
references the flow at high temperatures. So, a 5W-30
oil flows as 5-weight oil at zero degrees Fahrenheit and
30-weight at 210 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the optimal
weights for most cars.
Why
change your oil?
Oil reduces
friction and provides lubrication for your engine,
lessening wear. It also forms a
seal between the pistons, rings and cylinder walls and
helps cool the engine parts while reducing engine noise. Without new oil, carbon and varnish buildup would
ruin the engine. And without oil, your engine would
generate so much heat that the engine would lock up.
Over time, all oil breaks down. There are many factors
that contribute to the breakdown of the oil in your
engine, but heat is the biggest contributing factor. In
addition to the breakdown of the oil itself, there are
also additives that are put in engine oil. These begin
to break down and lose their effectiveness over time.
There is also the issue of contamination. Small bits of
dust, dirt and debris get into your engine and make the
or way into the oil. All these little bits of "stuff"
make the oil much less slippery and much less effective
at cushioning the moving parts of the engine.
Other Scheduled Maintenance Items
We'll also perform other scheduled maintenance checks
and replacements, top-off your fluid levels, and ensure
your belts and hoses are in good condition.
Other
Fluids
Automatic transmission fluid - an oil that lubricates
and cools the transmission.
Brake fluid - hydraulic fluid used to transmit pressure
evenly through the brake lines.
Coolant/antifreeze - the mixture of water and antifreeze used in
your
engines cooling system to maintain the engine's
temperature.
Air Filters
Clean air filters increase engine performance and fuel
mileage and reduce engine wear.
Battery
A weak battery creates strain on the alternator and
starter, especially during cold weather
Belts & Hoses
Belts and pulleys drive the alternator, water pump, fan, power steering
pump, air conditioning compressor and air injection
pump. Hoses and steel lines transfer coolant, brake
fluid and fuel throughout the vehicle. Over time, these
parts may crack, rust or leak. So, protect yourself by
following the factory maintenance schedule.
Timing belts
These are toothed, reinforced belts used to drive the
camshaft via a sprocket to a crankshaft. They ensure the
synchronization of the engine's camshaft, crankshaft and
distributor.
